Dipping into the Literary Classics

Monday, October 27th, 2008

For quite some time — I’m not sure quite how long — I’ve been meaning to read the so-called “Classics.”

Some of them really appeal to me, others i’ve read good things about, and some don’t appeal to me at all.  So i decided to start the ball rolling, and just this afternoon (Minutes before i started writing this post) I placed my order on Amazon.co.uk.

The books I’ve started with are as follows: Read More »

Today is like a rollercoaster

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

I attended my third night class, last night.  All is going very, very well.  Too well, maybe, as i made the mistake of handing in some of my work to the teacher (I feel 12 again, saying that) last week, for some feedback.

Not only was his feedback fantastic, but he kept referring to my work all the way through class, bringing me undue attention, which i really hate.  But i guess i can’t really grumble, i should be happy that he was so complimentary and use it to build confidence in my abilities.  Read More »

Flash Fiction - First story submitted

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

I read only a few days ago on a friend’s blog about something called Flash Fiction.  Writing stories which are under 1,000 words long.

The idea appealed to me, because i’m lazy, and also because when i do write, i’m such a harsh critic of my own work, that if it takes more than one sitting, it’s almost guaranteed i’ll delete it at the second sitting.

I was a little bored this morning and decided to look around for short stories websites, something to give me a little boost in my writing.  And one of the sites i landed upon was for Flash Fiction, which offers £50 to the author of any story published on their website/newsletter. Read More »

Chion

Chion - Darryl Sloan

A perilous journey through the strangest apocalypse .

Set, for the most, in a secondary school in Northern Ireland, and based around a mysterious substance that looks like snow, which turns out to be something a lot less savoury, Chion is a very compelling piece of work.I lazily chose to start reading the book after midnight, thinking i’d give it 20 minutes, enough to give me a taste, then continue the next day. 100 pages later, i finally gave into my sleep deprived eyes and when i did continue the next morning, i finished the book.

Very enjoyable read with an original plot, good characters and more than enough instances to make me think further about what had just happened and how i might have dealt with it.

Something that in my opinion, should be a big part of any sci-fi book/story/film, but sadly is lacking in most titles.

I look forward to reading more by Darryl.

My rating: 4.0 stars
